Heads Up on a Winter Storm

Well, part one of my interesting week post has passed through with reports of light snow on Wednesday afternoon.  We’re entering part two now with cold air spilling into the region.  This will be coldest air of the season, lows will drop into the teens tonight and Saturday morning.

Now for part three.

Well, actually there are two “weather systems of interest” coming into view.  The first is a front on Sunday. This has the potential to produce rain and/or snow in the Ozarks.  It looks fairly weak at this point.

More troubling is the strong temperature gradient and approaching upper level storm on Tuesday and Wednesday.  This has the potential to be a major winter weather producer over the central U.S.  The Ozarks appear at this point to be divided with rain south and snow north (mix in the middle?).  The details are not knowable at this point but the heavier snow potential does appear to be northwest of our area.

“Heads Up” means there is something worth watching and I will continue to do so over the next several days.

GFS Forecast for Noon Tuesday

GFS Forecast for Noon Tuesday

The surface weather map from the morning run of the GFS model valid at noon Tuesday.  The green shading is six hours of accumulated precipitation.  You can think of the blue dashed lines as a very crude separator between rain and winter precipitation.  This map implies and snowstorm from Kansas into northwestern Missouri.  Complete model output here.
